Family of four walks hand-in-hand through Arizona desert landscape with saguaro cactus and red rock formations.

If you have been trying to figure out where to take your family photos in Phoenix you are not alone. It is one of the questions I get asked the most and honestly I love helping families find the spot that actually feels like them. Phoenix has so much more variety than people realize and the light here is absolutely unmatched especially during golden hour. Here are my four favorite Phoenix locations and what makes each one special.

Papago Park — Red Rocks

A young family with a baby poses in a desert landscape with red rock formations at golden hour.

This is the one most people picture when they think Phoenix photography and for good reason. The red rock buttes create the most stunning warm backdrop especially when the sun starts to drop. The colors are rich, the textures are dramatic, and every photo feels like it belongs in a magazine. This location is perfect for families who want that classic Arizona desert feel with golden light and open sky.

Just know it involves walking on uneven rocky terrain so leave the heels at home and wear something you can actually move in.

Good to know

Best time to shoot: one hour before sunset. The light is everything here. The main lot off Galvin Parkway fills up fast so arrive at least 15 minutes early.

Papago Park — The Lagoon

Most people do not even know this side of Papago exists and that is exactly why I love it. The lagoon area has a completely different feel from the red rocks. Water, big shady trees, soft green tones. It is lush and calm and photographs beautifully for families who want something softer and more relaxed. It is also a lot more comfortable in warmer months since there is actual shade.

Good to know

Golden hour works beautifully here but this spot also photographs gorgeously in softer morning light. Same main parking lot, easy access to both sides of the park.

Heritage Square — Downtown Phoenix

Heritage Square is one of my favorite hidden gems in Phoenix. The Victorian era buildings, the brick textures, the beautiful landscaping and historic architecture create a backdrop that feels completely unique compared to anything else in the city. If your family has an editorial or romantic vibe this is the one. The warm afternoon light hits those buildings in the most gorgeous way and the variety of textures means every shot looks different.

Good to know

Best time to shoot: late afternoon when the buildings glow warm. Street parking is available nearby so arrive a few minutes early to find a spot.

Scorpion Gulch — South Mountain

Family of three in black outfits poses before a saguaro cactus in the Arizona desert, maternity photo session.
A young woman with dark hair in a messy bun, wearing layered beaded necklaces and earrings, bathed in warm golden sunlight.
Smiling pregnant woman in white flowing gown cradling baby bump, standing between stone pillars outdoors.
Three women pose in flowing attire before rustic stone ruins with mountain backdrop in desert setting.

If you want something truly dramatic and unlike anything else in Phoenix, Scorpion Gulch at South Mountain is it. The rocky canyon walls, the old ruins, the wild desert landscape. It feels almost otherworldly and photographs in the most stunning moody editorial way. This one is for the family that wants their gallery to feel bold and adventurous. It does require a short hike in so comfortable shoes and arriving before golden hour is a must.

Good to know

Golden hour light in the canyon is incredible. Park at the trailhead lot on Dobbins Road and arrive early especially on weekends.

How to choose the right location

The best location is the one that feels most like your family. Not the most popular one or the most photographed one. The one that makes you think yes that is us.

When you book a session with me I send you a curated location guide with all of my favorite spots including parking details, what to wear on your feet, and the best time of day for each location. That way choosing feels exciting not overwhelming.
