Downtown Phoenix is one of the most underrated places to shoot in the entire Valley. Most people think desert when they think Phoenix photography but downtown tells a completely different story. Historic architecture, modern buildings, urban streets, rooftop views, and hidden gems around every corner. Whether you are planning a maternity session, a couples shoot, a portrait session, or brand photography, downtown has a backdrop for every vibe.
Here are my six favorite locations and who each one works best for.

Heritage Square

Heritage Square is the heart of historic Downtown Phoenix and one of my most requested locations. The Victorian era buildings, lush landscaping, and warm brick textures create a backdrop that feels timeless and completely unique in a city known for desert landscapes. The light here in the late afternoon is absolutely stunning and the variety of textures and angles means every shot looks different.
This spot works beautifully for families, maternity sessions, and couples who want something romantic and warm.
Best time to shoot: Late afternoon when the buildings glow golden.
Parking: Street parking available nearby. Arrive a few minutes early to find a spot.

AZ Science Center

Right next to Heritage Square the AZ Science Center offers a completely different energy. Clean modern lines, bold architectural shapes, and a more contemporary urban feel. If you are looking for something editorial and sleek this is it. The contrast between the modern building and the historic surroundings creates a really interesting visual tension that photographs beautifully.
This spot is perfect for portrait sessions, couples with an editorial vibe, and anyone who wants something a little unexpected.
Best time to shoot: Late afternoon light creates beautiful shadows against the building.
Parking: Same area as Heritage Square.

Phoenix Old Courthouse

The Phoenix Old Courthouse is one of the most stunning and underutilized locations in downtown. The grand historic architecture, the beautiful columns, and the dramatic scale make every photo feel elevated and cinematic. It is the kind of location that makes people ask where was that taken.
This one is perfect for couples, maternity sessions, and portrait clients who want something dramatic and grand.
Best time to shoot: Golden hour when the warm light hits the facade.
Parking: Street parking and garage parking available nearby.

Downtown Streets

Sometimes the best backdrop is just the city itself. The streets of Downtown Phoenix have so much character. Murals, brick walls, neon signs, interesting textures, and the energy of an urban environment that is constantly evolving. Walking sessions through downtown always produce the most natural and candid moments because movement naturally relaxes people.
This works beautifully for couples, editorial portraits, and brand sessions where you want something raw and authentic.
Best time to shoot: Golden hour for warm light or blue hour just after sunset for a moody urban feel.
Parking: Multiple garages throughout downtown.

Bitter and Twisted Cocktail Parlour

If you want something truly one of a kind Bitter and Twisted Cocktail Parlour inside the historic Luhrs Building is it. One of the most awarded cocktail bars in the country, the interior is moody, dramatic, and unlike anything else in Phoenix. Dark wood, stunning bar design, incredible lighting. It photographs in the most gorgeous editorial way.
This one is exclusively for portrait and brand sessions. It is a 21 and over establishment so it is not the right fit for families but for the woman who wants bold dramatic brand photos this location is unforgettable.
Location: 1 West Jefferson, Phoenix AZ
Note: This is a working bar. Sessions here require booking in advance and coordinating with the venue.

ACE Parking Garage Rooftop

This is my secret weapon location in Downtown Phoenix. The rooftop of the ACE Parking Garage at 305 W Washington Street gives you unobstructed views over the downtown skyline and some of the most stunning golden hour light in the city. It feels elevated, unexpected, and completely different from anything else on this list.
This is perfect for couples, portrait sessions, and anyone who wants that dramatic cityscape backdrop. There is nothing quite like watching the Phoenix skyline light up behind your subjects during golden hour.
Best time to shoot: The hour before sunset. The light and the views are unreal.
Location: 305 W Washington St, Phoenix AZ 85003

How to choose the right downtown location

The best location is the one that matches your vibe not just your aesthetic. Downtown Phoenix has so much variety that the hardest part is narrowing it down. When you book a session with me I help you figure out exactly which spot fits your vision and your energy so you walk in feeling confident and excited not overwhelmed.
