A mini session is exactly what it sounds like, a smaller snippet of a full session, shorter in time, fewer final images, and more affordable, without all the bells and whistles of a full hour long experience. In Arizona, I typically offer them around spring and fall, sometimes tied to something specific like back to school, a holiday, or even a mommy and me series just for moms and their kids, since moms so rarely end up in the photos themselves.
They are perfect if you want photos throughout the year without a big commitment, if your toddler realistically will not make it through a full hour, or if you just want a quick, simple session for something like a pregnancy announcement. The tradeoff is exactly what you would expect from something shorter, less time for retakes, fewer variations in poses or setups, and a set date and location I choose rather than something fully tailored to your family. But for a lot of families, that tradeoff is worth it for the flexibility and the lower cost.
Mini Session or Full Session, How to Know Which One You Need
A mini session sounds like the obvious choice at first, shorter, simpler, and more budget friendly, but there are a few real tradeoffs worth thinking through first. Mini sessions run on a set schedule, so there is no flexibility to reschedule if something comes up, and if your child needs a few minutes to warm up to a new photographer, a fifteen to twenty minute slot does not leave much room for that. Styling is also more hands off, you get an inspiration board to help guide your outfit choices, but it is up to you to bring that vision to life. A full session gives you more breathing room in every direction.
You are not locked into one rigid time slot, and if life happens, there is flexibility to reschedule. I also work directly with you on what to wear, helping you build outfits that actually fit your family rather than just pointing you toward inspiration and letting you figure out the rest. If you want a completely custom experience, tailored to your specific family, your pace, and your vision, a full session is where that happens. If you want something quick, budget friendly, and you know your family does well jumping right into a shoot, a mini session can be a great fit too.
What to Expect During Your Mini Session
Since mini sessions move quickly, a little preparation goes a long way. You will get an assigned time slot, so plan to arrive a few minutes early already dressed and ready to go, since there is no buffer built in for last minute outfit changes or touch ups. Once your session starts, we move efficiently through a small handful of poses and setups within that single location, so do not expect the same variety you would get in a full session.
A little prep goes a long way with toddlers too. Keep the vibe playful, not pressured, telling them we're just going to go play somewhere fun works a lot better than "we're taking photos." Bring a small snack for a mid session boost, and if they've got a comfort item, a favorite toy or blanket, feel free to bring it, it can even make a sweet appearance in a photo or two.
After your session, you will receive a smaller curated gallery of final images, delivered on the same timeline as your full sessions, so you are not waiting any extra time to see your photos. The pace is quick, but it is designed to still capture real, genuine moments with your family, not just a rushed photo dump.
What to Wear for Your Mini Session
Since mini sessions move fast and usually center around a specific season or theme, keep your outfit simple and comfortable rather than overthinking it. You will get a styling board ahead of time to help guide your choices, so use that as your starting point, and coordinate rather than match, pulling from pieces you and your family already love.
Keep the setting in mind too, if it is outdoors in the Arizona heat, breathable fabrics will make sure everyone is more comfortable and more likely to actually smile, and staying hydrated matters just as much. And if you are still not sure what works, just ask, I am always happy to help you figure it out before your session.
